Ghost Recon Online: "being free-to-play is a counter to piracy", says Ubisoft producer

People who pirate games will always find a way to.. Well, pirate games. Some games who are single player only, for example, will tell you that you need an active internet connection at all times. That's about as annoying as having a crapload of zits.
If you really want to fight piracy, and make people invest in something they truly think is worth the price, you should be making better games.

Ghost Recon Online producer Sébastien Arnoult says that free-to-play games are a response to piracy – and an alternative to the restrictive DRM that’s annoyed PC gamers in so many recent Ubisoft games.
“We are giving away most of the content for free because there’s no barrier to entry. To the users that are traditionally playing the game by getting it through Pirate Bay, we said, ‘Okay, go ahead guys. This is what you’re asking for. We’ve listened to you – we’re giving you this experience. It’s easy to download, there’s no DRM that will pollute your experience.’”

How big of an impact will this be? We can only wait and see.

It’s being developed by Ubisoft Montreal with the support of Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm, and will arrive on PC in 2013. The single player campaign will pit Team Rainbow (goodies) against the True Patriots (baddies). The latter are a revolutionist group who claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians. So far, so Clancy.

Details are scarce, but we do know that you’ll be playing as Team Rainbow and will need to make “tough ethical decisions” to stop the “new breed” of terrorists. The campaign will be presented from different character’s perspectives, and there’ll be a fresh selection of co-op and multiplayer modes present.
“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6,” says David Sears, creative director. Poor choice of words there, David.- PCGamer

Not much more has been revealed, but definitely will keep you updated.
